Visit Robben Island Museum, apartheid-era maximum security prison, where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for 18 years and the District Six Museum, testimony to the people of District Six who had their houses bulldozed when the area was declared a’white’ suburb by the apartheid government.

Beyond Cape Town

Worcester Living Open-Air Museum at Kleinplasie, about 1km outside Worcester in the Cape Winelands (1 hours drive through the spectacular Du Toits Kloof Tunnel) on the way to Robertson. This living museum offers a glimpse into the life of early Cape pioneeers. Cederberg Mountains on the Cape West Coast hosts over 2 500 known San Rock Art sites. The Sevilla Rock Art Trail is 34 km from Clanwilliam (N7 North 2.5 hours drive from Cape Town) on the Wupperthal road, over the spectacular Pakhuis Pass with ruggedly beautiful landscapes and fascinating rock formations. Cape Agulhas (2.5 hours from Cape Town) at the southernmost tip of Africa in the Agulhas National Park, just 45 kilometres from the popular shark cage diving village of Gansbaai – all in the Cape Overberg. Take a trip to the Noon Gun, the source of the blast that thunders through Cape Town every day to signal noon (excepy Sundays and public holidays). Back in the 1800’s it was used to tell passing ships the time.
